Algebra EOC De-Brief

Calling ALL Algebra-ticians!!

I need your help! Please write a de-briefing narrative about the Algbera EOC Test. PLEASE... No specifics on questions (i.e. you can say "there were several systems that required the elimination method" however do not say "recall question #23 Solve 4x^2+3x+7=14").

You may answer anonymously, supply initials, or a first name (no full names please). Write whatever you feel, here are some guiding questions:

- How much studying, practice problems, etc did you do outside of regular homework?
- In the morning prior to the test, how would you rate your perceived level of preparation for the test? (scale of 1 to 5; unprepared=1 to fully prepared=5)
- After the test (in retrospect) how would you rate your level of preparation for the test? (scale of 1 to 5; unprepared=1 to fully prepared=5)
- About what percentage of the problems did you feel were easy? Medium? Hard? Impossible?
- About how many problems did you feel totally unprepared for?
- Any vocabulary that you were unfamiliar with (you can be specific here)?
- Did we miss any topics in the class that would have been helpful?
- Did you use the features of the GRAPHING calculator to either answer questions or check answers?
- Were you comfortable with the graphing calculators?
- We never got to Chapter 12 "Data Analysis & Probability" in our book at all.  Take a peek at it; Did this omission adversely impact your preparedness?

Thanks,
Mr. C.

  1. For the EOC I prepared alot. I took an online review quiz on mathchamber and did the chapter tests for the chapters I struggled with. On the morning of the test, I'd say I was a 4 in preparedness. After the test I'd say I was a 5 in preparedness. I would say about 30% of problems were easy, 60% were medium, 9% hard, and 1% impossible. I only felt unprepared on one problem which I cannot remember what was needed for it. All vocab was familiar, and I didn't use any special features on the graphing calculator. I was comfortable with the calculators and the chapter on Data/Probability did not impact my preparedness whatsoever because it was shown in one problem that I knew from sixth grade math.

  2. Well. I studied a bunch. I did the problems in every chapter review, and reviewed the sections where I had trouble remembering. But I didn't study as much as possible. In all, it was a difficult test, requiring logic. But there were definitely plenty of easy problems where it was like: snap and you penciled in the answer. Others required thinking, but when you figured out the answer you were positive that the answer was correct and you felt good about the answer written on the paper. Anyway, I came across a few where I was checking my work and I wasn't entirely sure where the absolute value parenthesis were on the graphing calculator. So that confused me.

But, all in all, it was a difficult test. Problems were confusing at times but simple in others.

  3. I did a lot of practice/study problems. On Spring Break, I did all of the Cumulative Review given. I did cumulative review problems, Chapter Test problems, watched video tutors and reviewed problem sets.
On the morning of the test, I felt 4-4.5/5 prepared.
After the test, I felt 4/5 prepared.
    Problem Ratings:
    Easy: 20%
    Medium: 55&
    Hard: 20%
    Impossible: 5%
I felt unprepared for about 2-3 problems.
I was familiar with all vocabulary.
I used the graphing calculator to check my work, but I did not know how to plot a specific point or where to find/how to use abs-val brackets. Otherwise, I was comfortable with the Graphing Calculator.
I think Probability would have been helpful to know & go over a little.
I think that the omission of Chap. 12 was a little troubling, I think going over Theoretical probability would have helped me on the test.

  4. I did a lot of studying and practice tests. Prior to the EOC I did many cumulative test problems and re read most chapters. In the morning prior to the test i would rate my perceived level of preparedness a 4. After the test, I felt more like a 5 except for a few problems.
    Ratings:
    Easy:25%
    Medium:55%
    Hard:18%
    Impossible:2%
I felt totally unprepared for 2 problems. I felt familiar with all of the vocabulary on the test. The only topic that would have been helpful to go over more was exponential functions. I only used the graphing calculator to check answers. I didn't use it for graphing. If I needed to use the calculator to graph I think I would have been fine. I only had one question about probability that would have been covered in chapter 12.

  5. I did a good amount of studying and some practice tests. Before the tests I thought I was somewhat prepared,(4) but on the day of the test I found it was surprisingly easy(5). A couple problems took me a long time to work out, but because I had infinite time i think I got every problem right. I mostly knew all of the vocab, and there was really only one simple problem on my test from unit 12. i knew all of the concepts and the only ones that gave me problems were some large equations to solve that required quadratics and a one word problem. I checked all of my work afterword and i got all of the problems right. The graphing calculator was mostly unncessary and I didn't really use it if I remember correctly.

  6. I studied a lot. I did all of the cumulative review and went bak through the whole text book we've gone over sofar to review anything I had forgotten. For being prepared on a scale of one to five I felt I was a five. I was ready I had done lots of review and knew all of the equations. After the test I still thought I was a five because all of the problems I didn't know were on things we hadn't ;earned yet (i.e. probability and permutations) Most of the problems were easy a few were medium, but those were mostly open-ended problems. There was no new vocabulary and they didn't use much of the vocabulary we learned. I didn't use my graphing calculator except to check lines and I had no problems. I think that learning chapter 12 would have been helpful on the EOC and the NJask.
