This Blog exists for the collective benefit of all algebra students. While the posts are specific to Mr. Chamberlain's class, any and all "algebra-ticians" are welcome. The more specific your question (including your own attempts to answer it) the better.

hw #1-6 Distributive Property
pg 50 #9-24, #33-40
I should have a few questions from the peanut gallery on this assignment!
For example, if the expression is -(4d+6) the "-" is equal to "-1"?
ReplyDeleteYUP. Whenever you see -6 or -x or -(x+y) or -(x-y)...you can physically replace the negative sign with multiplication by -1:
ReplyDeleteSo...
-6 = -1*6
-x = -1*x
For this problem:
-(x+y)
= -1(x+y)... now distribute the -1
= -1(x) + (-1)(y)
= -x + (-y)
= -x - y
For this problem
-(x-y)
= -1(x-y)
= -1(x) - (-1)(y)
= -x - (-y)
= -x + y
lmk if that clears things up 4ya
