As you will find increasingly as you progress in your studies, mathematicians love to debate many of the fundamental structures in the vast field called mathematics. I think the discussion ends up where we did in class. It is important that you recognize the ISSUE of continuity and discreteness. In some cases discrete data will be graphed as continuous, simply because it makes for a better visual, especially if many discrete points (e.e. our game attendance problems) are involved. The converse is never true, it would never make sense to graph continuous data as if it were discrete - this would be misleading and, in fact, inaccurate, since many points that are solutions are being excluded from the graph.
