This Blog exists for the collective benefit of all algebra students. While the posts are specific to Mr. Chamberlain's class, any and all "algebra-ticians" are welcome. The more specific your question (including your own attempts to answer it) the better.

hw #4-7 Patterns, Sequences, Numbers, Numbers, and More Numbers
I don't really understand how to write arithmetic terms.. I read the book & wrote it like this for #31: A(12)=A(1)+(12-1)3.25 But the back of the book says that you're supposed to write it like this: A(n)=50-3.25(n-1) Help!
Basically, you are correct. You wrote the rule for the 12th term. You should have written the rule for the nth term, and then written the rule for the 12th term by substituting 12 for n.
The only thing "wrong" with your answer above is that you wrote A(1) instead of 50. If you KNOW that the sequence starts with 50, there is no need to use a variable.
Watch the video tutor lesson... I think it will help.
I think I should have assigned #40 and #45... who can do those?
I didn't really understand what we did the other day with f(x) and then w(f(x)) so I don't really get #27. Help ?
ReplyDeleteThere are several ways to look at your question.
ReplyDeleteSo, if f(x)=6x-4, that means we could say the following:
f(1)=6(1)-4
f(1)=6-4
f(1)=2
f(3)=6(3)-4
f(3)=18-4
f(3)=14
So, if we said:
f(a)=26
what we're really saying is:
26=6(a)-4
6a=30
a=5
f(x)=6x-4 reads as follows:
In words, the function of x is to multiply x (or whatever is inside the parentheses) by 6 and then decrease that number by 4.
Try this using the same function:
If f(b)=80, what is the value of b?
As following the question above.. I don't understand how to do #39 :(
ReplyDeleteAlso, isn't the answer to #30 "any number other that 1 or -7"?
What is the value of b...
ReplyDeleteUm.. 80...?
With #27, you might be over-thinking a bit.
ReplyDeleteIf I asked you to solve:
6x-4=26
I think you would laugh all the way to the bank.
That's all there is to question #27, except it's in function notation.
As for 39, f(5) is equivalent to saying:
ReplyDeleteEvaluate 2x when x=5... I promise, that's all!
Okay thank you! :)

I am so confused with writing rules

Dear Confused,
ReplyDeleteCan you articulate your question a little bit more? Did you watch the section 4-7 video tutors?
Ok, Thanks! I will go watch the video tutor. The lesson today helped a lot, too.
